In response to the varying feedback on her performance at the awards ceremony, Hebe humbly said, “I know I am not perfect, but I will continue to work hard and work much harder.” She admitted it was her most nervous performance to date, where she could hear her heartbeats so loudly before performing. “The Golden Melody Awards is an important occasion in the music industry, I know audiences will definitely scrutinize every performance. The theme for this performance is Déjà vu, a French word which means seemingly familiar, therefore in the initial production stage we decided to change the chords in the musical re-arrangements and really went into the details.”
For Hebe, each of the three songs were specially and specifically chosen, after much discussions with the show producers to ensure it suits the theme of Mandopop classics, yet ensuring that audiences will be able to have an entirely different and brand new audio experience. When they finally decided on the three songs, it was not just because they were classics in the eyes of many, but also because the singers were very important singers in the Mandopop industry, each of them dominating a different era in the Mandopop history. 哭砂 (Weeping Sand) remains as an important fond memory in Hebe’s heart, she explained, “When I was young, I once found Tracy Huang’s CD in a drawer and after listening to 哭砂 (Weeping Sand), I found its melody very nice and soothing, up till now I still find it a classic.” As for the choice of Anita Mui’s 親密愛人 (Intimate Lover), Hebe has found Anita’s voice and performance very special and vastly different from those female singers of the same era. The very song 親密愛人 (Intimate Lover) is Anita’s classic, hence the choice, and perhaps in part as well due to sharing the same English name with Anita Mui prior to Hebe’s debut. As for the last selection 臉 (Face), it was a tribute to her one of her personal favourite singer, Faye Wong.

Personally, I really enjoyed and loved her performance! She was stable and really great in her voice. It felt as though she has made the award ceremony like a music concert that was nowhere close to the usual Mandopop music arrangements. Although she was so nervous you could see from her facial expressions and rigid body gestures. Still, a thumbs up for Hebe!
There are quite some discussions going around on her pronunciation and choice of enunciation in the songs. For me it was not an issue and it was a stylistic choice. Perhaps most people are unable to accept this choice.
Thanks for the videos!
I really enjoyed this performance as well! I hope the next time she performs for the GMA she’ll be singing a medley of her own songs instead =P
Great to know you enjoyed it as well!
True, hopefully she gets to perform her own songs, though it seems difficult because most singers are slated for performing tributes to other singers.
what is the first song’s title ?
the song is amazing .. and i think my ear and heart is in love with hebe’s voice .. lol..
The song is titled 哭砂 (Weeping Sand), originally sang by Tracy Huang.
I loved her voice in this performance too!
