Hebe recently accepted an interview at Yin Yue Tai whilst in Shanghai.

She shared quite a bit of herself in the interview and opened up relatively to the host’s questions. It’s really obvious she was tired from her expression and from her stuttering over her own words when she tries to answer questions. The great thing about this interview is not only the host, but Hebe’s responses. Like what she says in a part of the interview, she constantly observes and eventually decides whether to trust or open up to a certain person. In face of this specific host, she eventually decided to answer as much as she can.

GT: Welcome to today’s Yin Yue Big Guest, I am your host Guo Tao. The guest we invited today, if I placed her album against my shirt, we will blend as one. Let us welcome Tien Fu-Chen!

H: Hi, nice to meet you.

GT: Nice to meet you too. Wow, I really didn’t think my top and your album will have such an affinity

H: It’s red.

GT: Yes, it is red, isn’t it? This time you came with a brand new album, Insignificance. What’s interesting is before we started filming we were talking about the album. There are two small ants on the album cover, I’m not sure if everyone noticed.

H: Yes, it’s more obvious if you open it. It’s on the hair strands, right?

GT: Why were the two ants placed there?

H: This is part of the design because the album is titled Insignificance, so, the background is a vast land and the foreground is a close-up of my face. On my face there are strands of hair and on it are ants. In everyone’s mind, ants are considered as a smaller living organism so, but we are also like ants when compared to the universe, we are also very small and insignificant, so this is all to portray the great difference between 2 living organisms.

GT: Okay, for today, the topics we will be discussing with Fu-Chen are, in my opinion, quite interesting as well. We have divided you into 3 categories and we will explore each one by one.

H: Okay.

GT: First, we will analyse your complicated character. Because everyone says in this album, hmm, you see we split this into a few boxes and behind every box there are corresponding questions. Everyone says that inside Tien Fu-Chen’s heart, there stays another person.

H: Oh~ It is not only one, I think there may be a few. Actually it may be so for everyone. Who knows you may have other opinions within you now.

GT: I, I, I definitely.

H: Ya, everyone has that.

GT: I am AB type.

H: Then you must be even more split (personality).

GT: Hoho, so there must be countless people having a conversation on today’s show. Okay, let’s see what the words behind the first box are. Calm and Passionate. This album of yours, should be exuding a more calm and composed side of you, is that right?

H: Ermm, I usually leave an impression of being cold or calm to others. You see this expression is also towards the calm side.  But with this album cover, it will let people feel warmer.

GT: In your everyday life, are you more of a calm or warm person?

H: Originally I am a passionate and warm person, but after being socialized, I know speaking less and being more composed is better. But deep within in, somewhere in my heart I still am passionate about many things.

GT: What are the things now that you will still express your crazy or enthusiastic side?

H: Being around with my close friends and family, for example, it doesn’t have to be acting crazy or feeling very emotional, like, in regards to family, caring for them and loving them or certain things which I care about, I am still insistent and enthusiastic  about it, willing to put in a lot of effort into it. That is in itself a form of expressing passion.

GT: Speaking of, like what you said, the changes due to socialization, where you become less warm and enthusiastic, do you feel…

H: Ermm, it’s not becoming unenthusiastic, it’s…

GT: You don’t know how to express it?

H: Yes, yes, yes! It’s about concealing it.

GT: I think, at the start most people will feel that Tien Fu-Chen is like an ice berg, a cool beauty, giving people the feel of being cold and distanced. So, will you mind if people said, I think I am quite distant with Tien Fu-Chen.

H: Perhaps, I just, I don’t have that kind of charm where the moment I meet or see someone new and we will feel…

GT: Familiar or friendly.

H: Friendly, I don’t have that.

GT: Being friendly and familiar around others just leave it to Ella.

H: Yes, she has that kind of charm.

GT: The moment she comes, she goes “Ah ah ah~!”.

H: Yes. When you see her you can’t hold back yourself and will want to share with her your own woes or being very close to her, there’s no sense of distance from her. This is her natural charm.

GT: Has she ever picked on you like, “hey Hebe, can you be like me and be crazy for a bit?”

H: She won’t pick on me, because we are complementary.

GT: Oh~ okay. So we just spoke about being calm, but next I feel we should do something that will make you a bit more enthusiastic, because we are going to take a look at some results. There are 2 songs holding on to our top 2 positions, with the second position holding on for very long on our music charts and it seems that it has signs of rising further. There are 2 songs at the same time, you are fighting with yourself. Let’s take a look at the screen for the 2 songs. 2 songs, the top 2 positions, so you are fighting yourself!

H: Oh, Don’t You Think Of Me and Insignificance.

GT: That’s right. Since these 2 songs are fighting each other and this chart is really voted by your fans, one vote by one vote before you have these results. If you are to thank them, will you use the calm or passionate side of yourself to thank them?

H: Ermmm…For now, it will be more calm, but inside me I’m very happy.

GT: So it’s like, “Oh! My songs are all on the chart! And it’s the top 2!”

H: I am really thankful of everyone because we really put in effort to conceptualizing it and shot the MV, and everyone watched it. I’m really thankful to everyone.

GT: So you see, these 2 songs have great results. I think for you, calm and passionate, the difference between the two is really quite big. Because when you keep silent or when you’re thinking about things, everyone will be thinking, hmm, you must be analysing or thinking about something again. But when you are happy, you should be someone who is quite enthusiastic as well.

H: Yep!

GT: Alright, next, let’s take a look at the following words, what are they? It’s insignificant and mighty.

At the opening you said, the small ants represent minute and insignificance.

H:  Yes

GT: We, humans are also very small and insignificant.

H: That’s right.

GT: I think one of the reasons why people feel that, “Wow, the things Tien Fu-Chen thinks about are very abstract,” is after watching your MV.

GT: Talking about this MV, you said in Iceland, you felt as if you froze into a yam ball.

H: Yes, I am a popsicle-man. Everyone was having it rough.

GT: When you first heard you were going to Iceland for the shoot, were you very excited or slightly worried?

H: Excited, because I’ve never been there before. Yes, and being able to go to a place like that for this album, spending this kind of money and manpower for it, I felt very happy.

GT: Flying for 24 hours?

H: Yes.

GT: The moment you landed in Iceland, what was your first reaction?

H: Oh my! It’s so cold! Because the night when I arrived, the wind was really, really, really strong! And it was very cold. I thought to myself, “I’m done for, how am I going to spend the next few days here?” Because the clothes I wore in the MV is actually very thin and it has holes.

GT: Yes, it has those strips.

H: Yes, so the wind can pass through it. I began worrying if my body can withstand the shoot for 4 to 5 days.

GT: Oh, you shot for 4 to 5 days?!

H: Yes.

GT: So when you finished the shoot, did you not catch a cold?

H: At the very end, when we finished the filming, I was almost, very close to being down. Because we slept very little, so I was a bit feverish. But after a night’s sleep, I was feeling great again. Maybe because I usually exercise, or perhaps it’s the mind and my strong perseverance!

GT: They said you saw the Northern Lights there?

H: I did!

GT: But that period wasn’t the timing for Northern Lights?

H: Yes! In September it is actually a bit hard to see the Northern Lights. In the end when we completed the shoot and was on our way back, we saw the Northern Lights. It served as a most perfect ending for this trip. At that moment when I saw it, I felt, “My, I’m so lucky!” and I was very excited. And then I thought, “So lucky? Will I have finished up all my luck in this moment?!” Then I told myself, “No, I believe this good luck, this Northern Lights is a good omen.” So the pessimistic side shows up first before the optimism takes over.

GT: Wow, your thinking is really different from most people.

H: No, I just think too much, it’s super boring. Don’t be like me.

GT: Alright, this is insignificant and mighty. Next, let’s take a look at the following words, rational and emotional. Do you think you are more of rational or emotional? Within your feelings.

H: They co-exist, about the same I guess. It’s very hard for me to dissect myself and analyse how much percentage am I, but it should be about the same, 50-50?

GT: 50-50? There are internet users who say you are more of a rational person, because you promote a controlled life. It is to the extent where, if someone goes to your house and uses the toilet, you’ll go, “Oh! He/She is flushing the toilet! He/She is using my water.” (using the flush system)

H: Oh, no, that’s not it. That report is written wrongly. When I saw it, I also felt the reporter may have heard it wrongly, yes. It is that, I am very controlled myself. I treat others with tolerance but am strict with myself. I am very disciplined and controlled in the use of water, so my friends get influenced by me. So when they come to my house, if they accidentally pressed the flush system, pressed the toilet’s flushing system, the button. They pressed it and they felt, “Ah! So sorry, I pressed your house’s flushing system.” But I will tell them, “It’s okay, you are a guest, you can press it, you can just live normally like how you do.” Though for myself, I use water recycled from washing hands to flush the toilet. That, the sentence came from this. So it actually is a misunderstanding.

GT: Your self-control, apart from energy and resource saving, what other areas do you exercise it on? For example, if this bottle of mineral water is mine, I must finish it.

H: Yes, yes, I will finish it.

GT: What else?

H: Speech, or actions, all these needs to exercise self-control.

GT: I think, now that you’ve said it, I think you are really a bit more rational.

H: Seems like so ya?

GT: Yes. But recently everyone started saying you are emotional is because you have been crying quite a bit. Originally in the group, Selina is the one who cries most often. Now it seems you cry quite easily too. For example, during the concert tours you cried when reading the letter you wrote for fans, at the press conference when you saw your own MV you also cried.

H: Ha, that’s true.

GT: Why is it that you are suddenly crying so easily these days?

H: Hmm, I feel for it I guess.

GT: For example? What do you feel for?

H: When I saw Wislawa Szymborska’s poem ‘Under One Small Star’, I will have feelings for it, that is, she really hit my heart with it, all my emotions and resonance. So because of this seed, it extended and grew into this piece of work, this word. Then we all went in a big group to Iceland and put all working crew through tough times and shot the MV. When you really captured those feelings and when you see those images after the edits, the impact of the resulting images, seeing them is in itself moving. So it is, being very moved by these scenes, the nature, the talent of the director and his ability to understand me, to transpose what he comprehends about me into the work. That’s why I’m moved.

GT: Okay. Alright, on the topic of expressing parts of you, the following topic comes. Everyone said they gave you 2 nicknames. It’s quite interesting, have a look. Some call you Tien-mei (Sister Tien), others call you Chen-ge (Brother Tien).Have you heard of these names before?

H: I have only heard of Chen-ge, never Tien-mei.

GT: Why is it that there are more people calling you Chen-ge?

H: I want, I also want to ask them too.

GT: Fans call you Chen-ge?

H: That’s right.

GT: Everyone feels, you see, you used to say, you rarely reveal your emotions onstage, Selina can cry so intensely and you just console her from aside, but you don’t cry with her, right? But now it seems you cry more often. Do you think in your character, you have the trait of being strong-willed like a guy will have?

H: Being strong-willed like a guy…I am quite strong-willed.

GT: So are you someone who is very secure? Or should I say, you need others to give you a sense of assurance and security?

H: I need, I need others to provide me assurance and security.

GT: You need others to make you feel secure?

GT: When do you think you need others to make you feel secure the most? Means, you feel very lonely.

H: Most of the time I need to feel secure. It should be that, the more one appears to be strong, the more insecure they are. So, only those who feel very secure will be able to open up themselves in front of others, to tear, to cry or to laugh.

GT: Oh… But everyone is still discussing about this, why did they call you Chen-ge? Because every time you take photos, you tend to put your hands into your pockets, right?

H: Oh! Yes!

GT: Is this your own habit?

H: Subconsciously…

GT: Subconsciously?

H: When there’s pockets, I feel like if I put my hands in…

GT: You feel secure?

H: Ya, it’s not bad.

GT: Oh, so you are one who needs to feel secure!

H: I’m afraid so.

GT: Ok, alright! This is our complicated character q&a where we asked all sorts of questions. The next thing we are going to do, well, is still analysing you.

H: Ok!

GT: We are going into the segment of Sweet Talk. We’ve said that this album has many lyrics which needs time to digest and understand it. But are these representative of your inner self? We need you to give us an answer.

H: Sure.

GT: Tien Fu-Chen’s Sweet Talk, O or X Q&A. This will be handed to you.

H: Okay.

GT: Actually in this album I felt that many lyrics were written so beautifully and poetically. When you received these lyrics, were there some phrases that you went, “Wow, this is really the same as what I’m thinking,” or, “Wow, this is really written so beautifully.”

H: Yes, most of it is so. That’s why they are used in the album.

GT: That’s very true.

H: Yes.

GT: But being used in the album may not 100% be representative of your true opinions, since the lyrics are written by others for you, right?

H: Yes.

GT: And you need it to resonate with you. Right, so for these lyrics, you need to use O or X to tell us if it fits your personal perspective and your inner thoughts. Okay?

H: Okay!

GT:  Alright, let’s look at the first sentence. “Hoping to be cherished, yet scornful of being a protected gem / Willing to believe, yet I shut myself out.” It’s lyrics from Contradicting.

H: Yes.

GT: Is this reflective of your inner state?

H: Yes.

GT: Oh, it is your inner state?

H: That’s right.

GT: You hope to be protected and cherished yet you aren’t willing to believe it and close up your heart. This is really contradicting.

H: Hmm, that’s right. I hope to be protected, understood and cherished to a certain extent, but I still wish to be able to do my things I want to do.

GT: Oh, how about, “Willing to believe, yet I shut myself out,” what is with that situation?

H: Uh, it is that, I am very willing to believe all, but I will first observe and analyse, this is the rational side. Only then will I believe. `

GT: Alright, so Tien Fu-Chen is an extremely contradicting person inside. Next let’s take a look at the second sentence. “The heart is patently full of overflowing emotions yearning to share with someone / Thinking too much to the point of unfeeling  — The Pocket’s Warmth.” This sentence is quite, quite sad, after hearing it.

H: But I am not like that. So this is wrong, this sentence, it is wrong.

GT: Oh, this is not you?

H: This is from The Pocket’s Warmth, this is to remind everyone not to pile all your emotions in your heart and leave it inside you, where in the end the emotions all cool off and you become unfeeling, thinking too much. Like for me, the feelings and love I have for my parents, my sisters/friends, I won’t be ungenerous in expressing it. Like, I will, before I sleep, tell my mom that in this world I love you the most.

GT: Even now?

H: Yes. Or I will hug my parents and hug my sisters/friends, telling them bravely, or if I have any thoughts of them I will tell them enthusiastically. I won’t leave it inside my pockets till it has no warmth.

GT: So this one, this sentence, is not the real Tien Fu-Chen, right?

H: This is a…

GT: An attitude?

H: A sharing, a sharing, an advice.

GT: Okay, let’s see the next sentence. Next sentence is from Your Happiness Doesn’t Equate to Mine. “Loving to the extent that I hope my soul’s you / When you are stubborn I will be more than you are.” Is this, is this an attitude of yours?

H: No.

GT: It’s also not your attitude?

H: This is also a sentence, like, Your Happiness Doesn’t Equate to Mine, this is from the front (part of the song). It’s like sometimes some girls when they are in a relationship, I have been, I have experienced this before, where you kind of lose yourself a bit during the relationship. But in the end you will realise that the state of imbalance will not be able to make the relationship last. So you should still be a very complete and free self to be able to be in a very balanced state and stay in the relationship.

H: So this is a wrong state, that’s why it says Your Happiness Doesn’t Equate to Mine. You have to, everyone has to be happy in order to be able to maintain a relationship.

GT: Right. Let’s move on to the next one. The next sentence is from Not Drunk, “As long as I assume, it’s not a misunderstanding /  What’s right and wrong, it’s all specious.” How do you comprehend this? Is this you?

H: It should be right. It should be, hmm, more of using a drunken eye to view the world, to not treat everything too seriously and you will feel happier that way.

GT: And you won’t be too calculative about things.

H: That’s right.

GT: Because earlier, when I went through some videos I saw the interview from Xiao Yan Jie with S.H.E, where she said you are someone with a lot of wisdom.

H: Oh no, she, she’s the one who really has lots of wisdom!

GT:  A very, very smart girl. So I was thinking, this drunken state, is it derived by yourself where you feel I should be like this to be happier or is it in your character that you naturally feel , okay, this is nothing much, it’s quite alright?

H: Because often I feel that the reason why everyone is unhappy, like when we are having a conversation with our friends or when we hear our friends explaining why they are unhappy or why they are in a certain state, actually everyone is just discussing about what’s real and what’s not. For example at work, doing things a certain way, everyone is just talking about, a truth, if a certain way of doing things is right or wrong. But there isn’t really a right or wrong. It’s like, every single thing, if you look at it it’s all, from different perspectives it all has different sides, there isn’t an absolute.

GT: What are the things you will —

H: So I feel everyone doesn’t need to be too calculative or too serious about what’s right or what’s wrong, what’s real and what’s not.

GT: So Tien Fu-Chen, can I say that Tien Fu-Chen is someone who doesn’t argue?

H: Of course not.

GT: Oh! You will also argue with others over a certain thing?

H: Only if you care about it, will you argue over it. But, of course I try not to, this is something that happens when everyone is learning from each other. If I don’t argue, I think I should be here in a kasaya.

GT: Hahaha! Alright, this is what we have gathered, so like what you have said, within the songs, some are like an advice, hoping that everyone will not do that.

H: It is also an advice to self, reminding myself about it.

GT: Okay, next up, let’s see how this wise girl will face up the following thing. Right now we will look at the true Tien Fu-Chen. We have prepared a lot of interesting, this part is more interesting.

H: Alright.

GT: Because everyone says you have the gift of the tongue.

H: Oh no.

GT: And you are able to find some interesting adjectives to describe things.

DGC: My impression of Hebe then was really deep. Why is it so? This young girl, you will feel that the way she speaks is quite funny. Why is it funny? Because she will use specious adjectives. For example, we find this girl very pretty, we will use the simplest word to describe it. For her, she will say, oh this girl looks so dignified. So you will find that her descriptors are so different from others. That’s right, so she will leave such a deep impression on you.

GT: Please use your own words to describe three items or people. The first one, if you were to describe this bottle of mineral water, how will you describe it?

H: It’s, quite a thoughtful bottle of mineral water.

GT: So it is a thoughtful bottle of mineral water.

H: Ya, that’s right. There’s my photo and album title on it, so it’s quite, a bottle with marketing and publicity value.

GT: You are so direct! Alright, next question. Please describe the weather you saw today, how did you feel about it?

H: Today’s weather? It’s a feeling of bliss.

GT: Why do you feel it’s blissful?

H: Because the weather, the temperature is really low but the Sun is really warm. So it’s really blissful.

GT: So it’s blissful.

H: That’s right.

GT: Then, use a word to —

H: See, it’s boring right?

GT: Use a word to describe the host opposite you.

H: Very abnormal, hahaha! No no, actually I find you very, very colourful and well-rounded.

GT:  Colorful and well-rounded? That’s so interesting, this is the first time I hear someone use this to describe me!

H: Right, because you, you can even interview someone like me, posting questions and talking nonstop and you are undaunted to continue asking me all sorts of questions. And you follow through this, this production team’s and director’s arrangement step by step, so I find your heart really strong. You must have seen a lot and so you’re not afraid at all. So I think you are really great.

GT: See! You are someone who is really good at talking!

H: You are really good.

GT: This whole last portion is the part where you really can speak.

H: Because I was thinking, because just now I was thinking if today I were to be you, sitting there and having to meet this kind of person, this programme, I really won’t know how to continue. So in my heart I was already starting to admire you, you know?

GT: Oh?! Actually I think it’s really interesting, talking to you today, I have actually prepared myself mentally, because everyone says when they talk to you, you are someone who may not, like you’ve said, not one who easily takes everyone as a friend or easily tell others some stories of yourself. But I think you’re pretty good today.

H: I try my best, so that’s why I said I like it here. I opened up myself, so I thought alright, let’s talk.

GT: Alright, in that case let’s add on another question. Next up, we are going to do something. You see, since you say you are someone who doesn’t easily let others figure out who you are, thus we prepared some words. You have a look at it and arrange these words in order, how much percentage do they take up in your heart. There’s calm, passionate, composed, slow to warm up, amorous, gentle, cute, independent and thoughtful.

H: You’ve written it all!

GT: You have all of it?!

H: The director knows me well.

GT: Alright, just now we’ve seen all those words, so we’ve really prepared a board which says 100% true Chen. You can divide it up inside this, is that okay?

H: Yes.

GT: In the end you draw amorous as the biggest sector. That shouldn’t happen right?

H: That’s super thick-skinned of me right? I’ll write myself as cute for 50%.

GT: Slow to warm up. Wow, it takes up 2 sections?!

H: Ya, like this, 2 sections.

GT: This is about 25%.

H: That’s right.

GT: Alright, next. Your passionate takes up 3…

H: 1, 2, 3, 4

GT: 3 sections!

H: 4 sections.

GT: 4 sections, how many percent is that?

H: Yes, 4 sections.

H: I don’t care, our math are all no good. 40?

GT:  40% it is.

H: Hmm, calm is only 1 section. Thoughtful, I’m super thoughtful. I have 2 sections of this.

GT: And there’s one last section left.

H: Yes, there’s one more left. Let me think about it.

GT: So there’s still independent, cute, gentle and amorous. That’s it.

H: Okay, okay, umm…

GT: I know you really want to write that but you don’t dare to write it on.

H: Cute! Ya, that’s right, I think I’m really cute alright.

GT: Alright, come on let’s have a look. This is Tien Fu-Chen’s 100% true Chen. She’s given passionate the biggest section.

H: I’m very passionate!

GT: After which we have slow to warm up and thoughtful. Then it will be composed and cute. Hey, didn’t you, just now didn’t you say you are someone who is very hard to be warm, to be, your passionate side is kept within your heart?

H: That’s right.

GT: Right.

H: But if you’re referring to my true self I’m really passionate. The question is about my true self.

GT: So you are naturally someone who is passionate.

H: Yes, I am very passionate.

GT: So when you see others you want to give them a hug?

H: I really love everyone. I really love them. But I just don’t quite know how to express it, so sometimes I will just, like, make a heart shape and then run off. I don’t know how to say it.

GT: So everyone’s like, can you be more passionate?

H: Like previously I went on a radio show and I met my album’s designer, Aaron Nieh. I have always admired him and I felt that he is also someone who is quite passionate and harbours dreams for this society, for this world but he is also one who doesn’t really know how to express it. So when I saw him I really wanted to tell him something, but I couldn’t say it, so I just said, “love you!” and left.   

GT: He must be shocked, like, what exactly are you doing?

H: That’s right. Like, for me, towards fans, I also really love them but I too, don’t quite know how to express it. So I really, often love a lot of people and I also love my colleagues and a lot of crew who contributed to my album and helped in my work. But I almost always can’t find a way to express imy gratitude and love accurately through words. So I always end up saying, “oh, love you.” Then I get so worried over the awkwardness that follows right after so I always quickly run off.

GT: So talking about being passionate, there’s a corresponding one which is thoughtful. In which areas do you  express your thoughtfulness?

H: I personally feel that I always think for others.

GT: Is that so? For example?

H: For example today I’ve said something or done something, coming from the company’s standpoint, how will they feel? So when I say or do something, how will it be? I will self-reflect and think about it, so before I say or do a certain thing I will first think through it and consider if it will inconvenience anyone or cause trouble to others. Yes, I guess that’s a form of thoughtfulness.

GT: Actually for me I do think that you are indeed someone who is thoughtful. For example just now you mentioned if we switched roles, you will feel that if you met such a person what will you do?  I think inside you, you are still someone who is really willing to think for others.

H: I often think like that.

GT: Wow, really. Now, lastly talking about cute, how about this, let’s not talk about the cute side of you. If we were to let Tien Fu-Chen do a cutest expression, what will you do?

H: Roll my eyes perhaps. Because it’s really showing a true self so it’s cute.

GT: So your cute side is usually not easily shown to others?

H: Cute, if it’s doing these kind of adorable actions, all of you can just go online and see those cute girls do these and they are definitely a hundred times cuter than I am. So..

GT: Oh, then where do you show your cute side?

H: I express my cute side when I’m in love.

GT: Alright, so if fans want to see the cute side of Tien Fu-Chen they must first become her boyfriend, right? Okay, after having seen the true side of Tien Fu-Chen today, go back and have a listen to the album Insignificance and I think your understanding of her and the album will be different.
